Unable to find a sgian dubh for my best friend’s wedding I decided to make my own. How difficult could it be?
After significant online research, several trips to DIY stores and multiple purchases I was in a position to fashion a truly unique item albeit probably the most expensive Sgian Dubh in the West of Scotland.
Imaginative and creative as a child with memories of spending hours making wooden items with my grandfather, I realised that my previous career in law enforcement, where processes, discipline and structure were the standard, had dulled this spark. My renewed passion for wood crafts coincided with the challenges of the COVID pandemic and with new tools (including some of my late grandfather’s), a head full of ideas and my lost creativity reignited I found trial projects evolving into gifts for family, friends and colleagues.
The beautiful oak grain, their history and the whisky infused aroma made crafting from reclaimed staves and barrels a natural choice and, with a love of single malt whisky and the natural beauty of Scotland, Lochsloy Design was born.

My mission is to dedicate the same level of care, quality finish and attention to detail on every handcrafted item.
By recycling whisky barrels at the end of their working lives I am able to repurpose beautiful oak which would otherwise have been discarded or used for firewood.
From sgian dubhs to cufflinks, whisky flights to keyrings, each barrel is used to it’s full extent to minimise unnecessary waste and ensure that this small piece of Scottish whisky heritage can be enjoyed form many years to come.
