With over 500 Scottish Clans to choose from, any one with a hint of Scottish ancestry will be able to find their own clan. At Lochsloy Design we personalise and engrave every quaich with the individual clan crest to create a beautiful and bespoke item which will become a family heirloom in the years that follow.
Derived from the Gaelic “cuach” meaning cup, the quaich was a simple drinking vessel traditionally made of wood. Uniquely Scottish and designed to share with two handles or ‘lugs’, it was used across the Scottish Highlands as a sign of friendship to provide a welcoming whisky to visitors or guests.
The quaich has been cut from a single piece of locally sourced oak before being hand turned on a lathe, and finished with both pure tung oil and a final coat containing natural beeswax and oil which has been applied to both protect and highlight the stunning grain.
Since the 16th century the humble quaich has featured in wedding ceremonies where the bride and groom share a drink from the same cup symbolising both trust and intimacy. Building on the nature of sharing, quaichs are often passed around the wedding party allowing each person to take a sip of its contents as a symbol of sharing in the couple’s love and happiness.
Each quaich is truly unique and will hold approximately 60ml which should be enough for a couple of drams !!
Due to the individual and handmade nature of each piece, all sizes are approximate. Each quaich is handcrafted from natural products and while we try extremely hard to ensure our photos are clear, detailed and accurate the product’s colour and grain pattern may vary slightly from those shown.
